Sandösund Resort & Gyllenklobb Island ÅLAND ISLANDS, FINLAND

In the outer reaches of the Åland archipelago, where the Baltic Sea splinters into thousands of low-lying islands, Sandösund Resort offers access to one of the region’s most singular experiences: a night spent alone on a private island. Known as Gyllenklobb — ‘the island that glows like gold at sunset’ — this small, granite-fringed outcrop delivers a rare sense of seclusion in a landscape defined by light, water and silence. Åland occupies a cultural crossroads between

Finland and Sweden, its identity shaped by centuries of trade, conflict and seafaring self-reliance. Reached by ferry or short flight from Stockholm, Turku or Helsinki, the archipelago feels gently removed from mainland tempo. Forested islands, sheltered coves and glassy channels reward slow exploration. Sandösund Resort, on the island of Vårdö, serves

as the starting point. Guests are introduced to Åland’s history, including the ruins of Bomarsund Fortress, a vast 19th-century Russian stronghold destroyed during the Crimean War, its remains scattered across meadows and shoreline. It’s a fitting prelude to a journey shaped by history and stillness.

The heart of the experience lies offshore. A short

boat ride carries guests to Gyllenklobb, a privately owned island hosting a single, handcrafted cottage. Built as a place for writing and reflection, the cottage remains deliberately simple, designed to frame the surrounding seascape. Once the boat departs, the island becomes entirely private until morning. A wood-heated outdoor hot tub sits metres from

the water’s edge, inviting hours of quiet immersion as the Baltic stretches out in every direction. Evenings unfold slowly — cooking, reading, watching light shift — until darkness settles and the island returns to stillness. The following day, guests return to Sandösund,

where time can be spent cycling quiet roads, kayaking between islets or exploring shallow, sandy beaches. The resort’s taverna serves local specialities, including smoked fish and traditional Åland pancakes. Many choose to stay for three nights: the price includes transfers from Mariehamn, accommodation at Sandösund Resort, one night on Gyllenklobb Island and all meals (excluding drinks).
