Kendwa Rocks Beach Hotel ZANZIBAR, TANZANIA
On the sunlit northwest shore of Zanzibar, where the tide never leaves the sand and the horizon glows in flaming African sunsets, you’ll find Kendwa Rocks Beach Hotel — a place welcoming travellers from every corner of the world since 1996. What began as a handful of palm-leaf huts built by a small family of dreamers has grown into one of the island’s most beloved beach destinations, yet it never let go of the easygoing spirit that shaped it. The hotel’s founders fell in love with Kendwa long
before the area became a postcard name. Back then, everything was built by hand, using coral stone and coconut wood, with a belief that life should feel natural and rooted in the sea. Today, that same feeling flows through every part of the hotel. Rooms range from antique-filled Historical Suites to African- and Arabian-inspired spaces and luxurious pool bungalows — each reflecting the cultural blend that makes Zanzibar a meeting point of worlds. Days here unfold slowly. The beach invites you to
swim at any hour, dhows glide past as the sky turns gold, and the Mermaid Restaurant tempts with spice-infused dishes and freshly caught seafood.
For those mixing work and wanderlust, the High Tide co-working space offers a calm corner to focus while staying connected to island life. Kendwa Rocks also knows how to celebrate.
What began as a small beach gathering in 1996 has become East Africa’s largest monthly event: the Full Moon Party, with acrobats, fire dancers, African beats and international artists. Away from the beach, adventure is close — whether you’re snorkelling at Mnemba Atoll, wandering around spice farms and meeting artisans in local villages. Boredom doesn’t exist here. As Kendwa Rocks has grown to over 100 rooms,
it has also grown in responsibility. The hotel has long supported its community and environment, and in 2025 launched the Kendwa Rocks Foundation, focusing on education, upcycling and ensuring tourism benefits those who call this place home. Nearly three decades later, one thing remains constant: Kendwa Rocks is a place to relax, explore, dance, connect and feel completely yourself — guided by the sun, the sea and the spirit of Zanzibar.
