Bazaruto Sands BAZARUTO ISLAND, MOZAMBIQUE

In Mozambique’s glittering Bazaruto Archipelago, where the turquoise Indian Ocean meets white dunes and island vegetation, lies Bazaruto Sands. It’s a story of paradise preserved, set within one of Africa’s most spectacular marine sanctuaries. Just off the coast of Vilanculos, Bazaruto Island

forms part of a Unesco-protected marine park of coral gardens, seagrass meadows and shifting sandbars. Warm currents shelter the last viable population of dugongs in the Western Indian Ocean. At sunset, fishermen glide across the water in traditional dhows, their triangular sails glowing amber as light fades over the archipelago. Locals call it the island of the mist, a place where

winter fog rises from the dunes like smoke from an old fire. This ethereal quality shapes daily life. In partnership with the community, Bazaruto Sands shares the island’s natural beauty and soul. Built with natural materials and traditional techniques, the lodge blends seamlessly with its surroundings. Suites open directly onto the beach, reflecting a belief that true luxury lies in stillness, simplicity and connection to nature.

Guests wake to birdsong and the rustle of palms,

spending days between pool, verandahs and shoreline. Evenings glow with lantern light and Southern Hemisphere stars, the Milky Way arching bright above the dunes. The menu draws from the sea and local flavours:

fresh line fish, prawns and calamari prepared with Mozambican spices, coconut and lime. Favourites include peri-peri prawns and crab curry with coconut rice and matapa stew. Private beach dinners beneath the stars offer intimate moments shaped by the island’s rhythm. Adventure waits above and below the surface.

Guests snorkel reefs ranked among the finest in the Indian Ocean or dive deeper to encounter turtles, manta rays and schools of fusilier fish. Trips to nearby Santa Carolina — Paradise Island — reveal another side of the archipelago’s beauty. Behind the lodge, mangroves teem with birdlife.

Guests can wander dunes and beaches, visit the lighthouse, or explore by paddleboard, kayak or dhow. Seasonal whale-watching, sea safaris and sunset picnics complete the experience.
