ew holidays bring together the generations like a trip to the Alps; from world-class skiing

and outdoor activities to high-end dining, shopping and entertainment, there is something for all the family. For those fortunate enough to have spent time over the winter on Alpine slopes, the thought of investing in a home there is sure to be appealing. In Knight Frank’s recent survey of more than 700 clients worldwide, having a holiday home was the primary reason for purchasing a property in the French and Swiss Alps. Knight Frank’s Alpine team share

their expertise on how to approach a purchase with family in mind, and what to prioritise in your search.

Convenience is key “Bear in mind that your little ones will be in their ski boots and have to carry their skis, so the shorter the distance you are from the skiing, the better,” advises Laetitia Hodson in Knight Frank’s International Residential

team. Consider properties close to a ski lift, or even better, ski in, ski out chalets where you are right on the slope. It’s also beneficial to take time to find out about the amount of green and blue runs in the vicinity, allowing budding learners to find their feet in locations where the mountains aren’t as steep. Knight Frank can help you compare more than 20 of the top resorts in France and Switzerland by factors such as altitude, piste length and snow conditions. Te travel time to the resort itself is

also an important factor to consider. Resorts within easy reach of transport hubs help avoid lengthy car rides with restless children. Destinations such as Megève, Morzine and Chamonix are within around an hour’s drive of Geneva airport, with outdoor activi- ties to be enjoyed year-round.

Location, location, location While skiing is undoubtedly a top priority, it’s equally important to think about the wider variety of activities

available for family members. “When holidaying in the Alps you often have three generations of the family under one roof,” says Roddy Aris, of Knight Frank’s International Residential team. “For many of the buyers we advise, the focus is very much on celebrating this time together.” Popular destinations like Verbier

and Courchevel 1850 shine in this area, offering a wealth of outdoor and indoor sports, along with excellent child-friendly facilities. Meanwhile, charming, traditional villages such as Saint-Martin-de-Belleville have a relaxed atmosphere with less emphasis on apres-ski.

Inside and out If extended family and friends are with you, a chalet with a generous provision of bedrooms is a must. However, it’s important to factor in the size and layout of the rest of the property, too. “Te most desirable properties have living areas that match the sleeping accommodation. If you have a large chalet that can sleep six or more people, but the sitting area only caters for three or four, that could prove chal- lenging,” says Alex Koch de Gooreynd, of Knight Frank’s International Residential team. Tose with sepa- rate spaces to entertain children are particularly popular with families.
