SPRING GARDENING CHECKLIST
Dickon Harding, gardens and landscape manager at Raby Castle, Park and Gardens, has shared the crucial jobs that gardeners should be undertaking this month to ensure their gardens are blooming and prosperous in the summer.
1. Clear away growth from last year’s perennials. 2. Suppress weeds and improve soil health. 3. Coppice dogwoods and willow. 4. Prune and tie in roses and other climbers, and cut back damaged stems. 5. Pot up water lilies for the pond. 6. Install bird boxes. 7. Sow seeds such as sweet peas, basil, lettuce and tomatoes indoors. 8. Prepare vegetable beds by undertaking regular hoeing. 9. Sow hardy veg in outside beds. 10. Aerate lawns and apply fertiliser. 11. Sort through the garden shed and clean and sharpen pruning tools.
