FALL ASLEEP UNDER THE STARS AND WAKE TO FIND A PICNIC BREAKFAST ON
I NAY PALAD, KENYA
magine the African sun warming your skin as you make your way through the heart of Laikipia, one of Kenya’s most iconic safari locations. Then imagine the sound of birds
calling, the rustle of wildlife walking through dry grass and the gentle sound of water flowing. Here you’ll find a unique and intimate overnight experience – the NAY PALAD Bird Nest Retreat. Perched above the tree-tops overlooking the river and the endless plains, this takes the concept of nesting like a bird to a new and luxurious level. A collaboration between Segera retreat and Carolin Dekeyser, founder of NAY PALAD (creator of artisanal objects and magical destinations), the aim was to design a luxurious jewel in the heart of nature. Architect Daniel Pouzet has translated this dream into the tangible, utilising raw materials such as farmed wood and tree branches that have been woven into the nest by local community members. The structure offers you a 360o
bird’s-eye view of the beautiful, wild surroundings
and is designed to sleep two guests, but a small family would also fit in. Comfy beds are situated in the shelter of the first floor and on the top deck, all prepared with luxurious linen and warming hot water bottles. The interior suite has all the trimmings you could wish for, including a fully- equipped bathroom with running water (solar-heated) and a flushing toilet. Your adventure starts with a game drive or bush walk
through the Kenyan plains. Just before sunset, you arrive to find the nest lit up with lanterns. Here, you’re greeted with Champagne laid out on the top deck. Enjoy a picnic dinner as the sun kisses the sky goodnight, a culinary treat that embraces Segera’s farm-to-table approach. What isn’t grown in its own fruit, vegetable and herb gardens is sourced from neighbouring farms and ranches. This creates mutually beneficial relationships with local farmers, while minimising the retreat’s carbon footprint. Fall asleep under the stars and wake to find a picnic
breakfast on your doorstep, which you can savour as you watch elephant, giraffe and other wildlife at the river. “To wake up to the magical sound of wildlife and
birds, surrounded by pristine nature as far as the eye can see, is a life-changing experience; this is a place of true, untouched wonderment,” says Segera General Manager Jens Kozany. The tree-top experience is included in the rate for
guests staying at Segera Retreat for five nights or more. If you stay only one night, it will cost you about R15 803 for this option. Visit:
