LIFE BY LEXUS 08

THE ART OF CRAFTSMANSHIP

The people who work at Lexus’s factories aren’t just employees – they’re craftsmen who pride themselves on delivering superior quality. The most senior craftsmen at Lexus are known as takumi, which is an ancient Japanese word that roughly translates as “artisans”. Their goal is simple: the pursuit of perfection in their chosen field, be it paintwork or welding, vehicle dynamics or interior crafting. Takumi are responsible for maintaining the high standards Lexus demands of all its vehicles. Becoming a takumi is no easy task. Candidates need at

least 25 years’ experience and must complete the challenge of folding a relatively simple origami cat. But there’s a catch – they have to do this using just one hand (the non-dominant one) in under 90 seconds. This level of exceptional craftsmanship is applied to every aspect of Lexus design and development.

THE PACKAGING REVOLUTION

With the goal of reducing the amount of plastic waste that ends up in landfills, Cape Town’s first plastic-free grocery store was launched in December 2017. Nude Foods offers consumers healthy, affordable

products with the lowest possible environmental impact. The grocery store sells organic fruit and vegetables, dry goods, super-foods and a range of oils and vinegars, as well as earth-friendly home and body products. Goods are stored and packaged in recyclable brown paper

bags, re-usable cotton bags and glass jars. Consumers can also bring their own containers to fill with goods. 5 Constitution St, East City Precinct, Cape Town.

DIGITAL DETOX HOLIDAYS

A recent study shows that the average person touches their smartphone 800 times a day – and this doesn’t stop when we’re on holiday. Taking a break from your digital devices can result in significant improvements to your health, happiness and productivity. More travel companies and hotels are tapping into the demand

for restorative getaways by offering digital detox packages or incentivising guests to go tech-free. Jacada Travel African Retreat offers a range of authentic safaris that

are far removed from the demanding world of email, Instagram and WhatsApp. Set in beautiful, yet remote, tech-dead zones where you can unplug and unwind, the 12-day Tanzania and Mozambique retreat starts with a safari in the Selous Game Reserve and concludes on the breathtaking beaches of Mozambique. You can also enjoy a yoga class or spa treatment for some extra R&R. Visit: www.jacadatravel.com
