CHILLING OUT We talk to Amanda Maidman,

owner of Scoop, a small-batch artisanal ice-cream company in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN)

What sets your ice-creams apart

from other offerings? When I started, I wanted to celebrate the beautiful local KZN produce. I come from a background of gastro pubs in the UK, where the menu changes on a regular basis. I wanted to apply that model to ice-cream. After more than three years in the business, I’ve found many of the flavours are so popular that I can’t take them off the menu, so we try to launch a new flavour every month. Our macadamia nuts, granadillas, lemons, limes, litchis and naartjies all come from local farmers. We also make our own vanilla sugar cones.

What are your ice-creams’ standout features in terms of

texture and taste? Our ice-creams and sorbets have a depth of flavour that I haven’t found anywhere else in SA. We use natural ingredients with no artificial colours or flavours. To make our granadilla sorbet, for example, we churn locally grown granadilla pulp with a little sugar syrup, so your tastebuds get a smack of sweet and sour as soon as the spoon touches your tongue. THE RISE OF TEETOTALISM

Non-alcoholic drinks are on the increase globally. According to Flux Trends: “A study by researchers at the USA’s San Diego State University and Bryn

Mawr College found that Generation Z is growing up slower and more responsible than previous generations. Furthermore, the UK’s Office for National Statistics revealed that there’s been a

‘significant’ fall in alcohol consumption among the 16- to-24-year age group over the past 10

years. The percentage of young people who don’t drink any alcohol at all has risen by 32%.”

While some people add The Duchess to their gin instead of plain tonic, it’s actually a sugar-free, virgin G&T. Its botanists crafted it with re-

distilled juniper berries and botanically infused tonic water. It’s blended with aromatic layers of orange peel, allspice, star anise, cloves and cardamom – and it’s delicious.

Castle Free recently launched in SA. The first non-alcoholic beer to be brewed in this country, it contains less than 0,05% alcohol by volume of liquid.

“Castle Free provides people with the freedom to enjoy all the taste and sociability of beer, but without the alcohol,” says Vaughan Croeser, Brand Director of Castle Lager.
