AUTHENTIC HOMEGROWN FOOD FIRST SUNDAYS


You’ve heard of the art-focused First Thursdays in Braamfontein and


Rosebank, Johannesburg. On the first Sunday of every month, The Valley – a collective of creative businesses on the east side of the inner city (New Doornfontein, Bertrams, Troyeville


and Lorentzville) – hosts First Sundays. You’ll find exhibitions and pop-up


events taking place at Piece, Art Eye and ROOM in the Ellis House building, Dead Bunny Society, TwilSharp


Studios, The Tennis Club, Spaza Art Gallery, Victoria Yards and more. Victoria Yards opened in December last year and promises to be a space


filled with artisanal product producers, community food gardens and artists’ studios. When you’ve finished your


wanderings, grab a plate of prawns at The Troyeville Hotel, or stop at Victoria Yards’ Impi Brewing Co, which has excellent pizza and cold lager on tap.

Founder of the Mzansi International Culinary Festival and owner of Africa Meets Europe Cuisine, Nompumelelo Mqwebu previously worked as a chef at Janet’s Restaurant and Zimbali Lodge. Her new book, Through the Eyes of an African Chef (Quickfox, R450), has a strong focus on sustainability. She’s travelled the globe to learn about different cultures and their approach to organic farming and sustainability, and even spent time at the Ballymaloe Cookery School in Ireland, right next to a 40,4ha organic farm to learn from them and share her own knowledge. Mqwebu believes passionately in


returning to her African roots, eating what her ancestors ate and moving towards natural foods and away from a highly processed Western diet. While her recipes celebrate traditional ingredients like amadumbe (taro root), iselwa (baby pumpkin) and izindlubu (jugo beans), they also offer a contemporary twist, such as amadumbe salad with pesto or fusions with other cultures, such as

BREAKFAST ON THE GO Pablo Eggs-Go-Bar is one of the best


early breakfast spots in Jo’burg and makes a mean, yet super-smooth coffee. After trying their entire menu,
