Education Spotlight
Investment Casting Classroom Kit in Action by Joseph E. Fritz, Executive Director, Investment Casting Institute
science and mechanical engineering students at the University of Arizona to discuss the investment casting process. This was the first opportunity that I had to use the new classroom education kit in support of a meeting with students at this level. I was pleasantly surprised at how easily the kit brought the process to life for these young engineers. This was the first time that many of these student have had the opportunity to see and handle a shell mold, as the UofA’s foundry is limited to sand casting.

Unlike other discussions that I have held without the kit, where the focus leans more towards job opportunities, I found that giving these students the opportunity to see and handle materials used throughout the process drove meaningful technical discussion. Of course there were still questions pertaining to careers opportunities, but

t the invitation of Dr. David Poirier, I was afforded the opportunity to meet with a group of material
the kit made this event a much more engaging experience. In fact, we went well
past the scheduled classroom
time and could have continued our discussions had the classroom not been needed for another lecture. My host, Dr. Poirier, has a diverse
background in our industry and augments the University’s curriculum by addressing investment casting as part of his teachings, including arranging trips to local area foundries. I truly believe that he and his students are a resource to our industry, and I look forward to posting their resumes on our website for intern and full time employment opportunities. I encourage all of our members to take the time to review our resume postings when looking for engineering resources. As a reminder, the Technical Committee has established a program where the ICI will share the cost of an intern with a member foundry, so I encourage you to take advantage of this program and look at the students that
are interested in our industry. Should
you have any
