European Industry Advocacy The EICF has registered into the

EU Transparency Register with a public ID number 966828336007-33. The transparency register is a database that lists organisations that try to influence the law-making and policy implementation process of the EU institutions. The register makes visible what interests are being pursued, by whom and with what budgets. In this way, the register allows for public scrutiny, giving citizens and other interest groups the possibility to track the activities of lobbyists. During the year 2019 the EICF has continued being in contact with the ECHA (European Chemicals Agency) in defending the industrial use of XLPS as a filler for the Wax used in the Investment Casting.

Based on the information

provided by the EICF, the use of XLPS in investment casting would appear to be an industrial use, not undertaken by either consumers or professional users. As such, the use of mixtures containing XLPS could continue at industrial sites

should the proposed restriction be

adopted. This derogation is set out in paragraph 4 of the proposal. (Mixtures containing XLPS would not able to be placed on the market for use by consumers or professionals, unless any of

the derogations under paragraphs

5 were applicable). Once finalized the process of public consultation the subject is now with the EHCA SEAC (Committee for the Socio-Economic Analysis) and with the EHCA RAC (Risk Analysis Committee). It is anticipated that some sort of additional labelling requirements shall be applicable reporting for downstream users of mixtures containing microplastics at industrial sites to provide ‘any relevant instructions for use to avoid releases of

microplastics to the environment,

including at the waste life-cycle stage’. These would be applicable to sites using XLPS in investment casting (and their suppliers).

Cooperative Research

Cooperative Research in transversal fields of science application is an aspiration present within the EICF Articles of Association. A renovated Research Group has been constituted during the year 2019 based on the cooperation of the Research & Technology Organization members and open to the participation of all EICF members. First initiative is being worked out around the definition of the Investment Casting Technology Roadmap as a first milestone which could help to identify and prioritize possible areas for research either for the members on their own or as cooperative research within the association.

Education & Qualification of IC Professionals

In continuation with the previous year, during the year 2019, work has been

devoted to build up an Investment Casting European education & qualification course for postgraduates and engineers getting into this industry. Objectives pursued are related both to increase the awareness of this industry within the graduates at the universities and to support the training activities of the industry when hiring new professionals. A framework to substantiate the above is being discussed with several European Universities with interest into the Investment Casting within the education and research portfolio. Some outcome is expected to take form during the year 2020.

During 2019, EICF value proposition was reviewed, adjusted and formulated as the “ten reasons to join the EICF”. Derived from this value proposition different action plans are being executed to substantiate it.
