editor’s welcome

Has it really been a year since we upped sticks and made Paris our home for the Clia River Cruise Conference 2018?

Apparently so, and this year it’s back to Amsterdam, where it all began nine years ago, when river cruise was just a fledgling, finding its feet in an ocean-dominated sector. Since then, it’s seen unprecedented growth, with river lines upping their game every year in terms of destinations, dining choices, wellness offerings and excursions, as they cater to an increasingly diverse and ever-more discerning crowd. In this issue, we look at those changes and assess what 2020 holds in terms of trends, ships and up-and-coming rivers – from the Nile to the Mekong (page 36). We sail the Douro on Spirit of Chartwell (page 17), home in on how to sell the Ganges (page 23), and sample several new and revamped vessels, including Uniworld’s Bon Voyage (page 41). We also bring you everything you need to know about the conference, from the key speakers to the ships you’ll be able to visit. But even if you’re not attending, there’s plenty to glean from the following pages, so read on to find out the latest and wise up on this diverse and lucrative sector.
