VIENNA STATE OPERA HOUSE

Top 5 sights in... 1 2 BELVEDERE PALACE

The outdoor Naschmarkt, located a few minutes’ walk from the opera house and Hofburg palace, is Vienna’s biggest market, stretching more than half a mile and buzzing day and night with locals and visitors. You can taste your way around the stalls; stock up on herbs, falafel, olives and exotic spices; enjoy a bevvy or two in the lively bars; or refuel in the restaurants, which offer everything from Asian cuisine to local specialities and Turkish delights.

SCHÖNBRUNN PALACE

Once the favourite residence of empress Maria Theresa, Schönbrunn Palace is now Vienna’s top visitor attraction, and it’s little wonder. It’s a baroque masterpiece with numerous grand staterooms and beautiful gardens, complete with a spectacular fountain, an orangery and even a maze. The Gloriette, a barracks-like building constructed on a hill close by, is worth climbing for panoramic views over the gardens.
