The link between retaining strong man-

agers and achieving strategic objectives has driven the company to make talent man- agement and internal career progression a continued priority in 2019. “We have a number of programmes aimed at nurturing a talent pipeline, including the exter- nally accredited you:niversitynext programme; a fast-track, two-year management develop- ment scheme,” explains van Sterkenburg. It targets team members who have been

identified internally; external candidates with a college or university education and hospi- tality work experience; those with hospitality- or business-focused degrees; and candidates with supervisor-level work experience in hos- pitality with a relevant foundation education. “Our talent management and development

BREXIT – GOOD OR BAD FOR PROMOTION?

So, back on the thorny Brexit issue, if you are an EU national, how does it affect your development prospects – if at all? The relative ease with which EU nationals can obtain formal settled/pre-settled status to remain in the UK means many operators believe the job market at this level remains buoyant and managers and heads of department are far more likely to consider changing job within the UK hotel market than looking for opportunities elsewhere in the EU. “Brexit remains an

unknown quantity,” says 50

Simon Coulson, director of human resources at Hotel Café Royal. “On the whole, but not exclusively, the impact has been felt at entry level, with a drop in applicants for lower-level roles, especially in housekeeping and F&B. While there has been some movement at HoD level, this has been less keenly felt, as these colleagues tend to

have been in London and the UK longer and have developed their careers here. In short, they are more likely to be settled into life in the UK for the long term and have more personal and career investment.” But while Brexit is

taking up a lot of oxygen, BaxterStorey’s people director Maureen Sandbach says: “I don’t believe Brexit uncertainty has affected us as of yet. Predominantly, I think people are waiting to see what’s going to happen. People are waiting to see what opportunities there will be.”
