LUCKNAM PARK HOTEL & SPA Wiltshire, UK


LOCATION: Lucknam Park Hotel & Spa is set deep in the Wiltshire countryside in Chippenham, a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Gatwick and Heathrow and one hour from Bristol airport. Alternatively, guests can use the property’s helipad. The historic Roman city of Bath is a 20-minute drive away.


FIRST IMPRESSIONS: We arrive via an impressive mile-long avenue of 400 mature lime and beech trees, which slowly recede to reveal the 18th-century Palladian mansion, where we check in among plush sofas and rows of wellies lined up for guests to explore the 500-acre estate. Our room is the Lilac Suite, which has French windows that open onto the circular lavender garden on the west lawn. The suite has antique English furnishings, which give a nod to its historic past, as Üill >à Ìhi ÌoÕVhià ov lÕÝÕÀÞ iÝ«iVÌi` in > wÛi-ÃÌ>À hoÌil q hi>ÛÞ yoÀ>l `À>«iÃ] o>k >n` m>ho}>nÞ vÕÀniÌÕÀi >n` > m>ÀLli bathroom with a deep, standalone bath. The double sofa bed in the living area is set up for our nine-year-old son, allowing our Grand Suite to comfortably accommodate a family of four.


THE FACTS: Lucknam Park opened as a hotel in 1987 following a long history of wealthy owners dating back to the 12th century. The property also did a stint as a home for evacuees and another as informal headquarters for airmen during the Second World War. It has 42 rooms, including 13 suites and nine cottages, which range from one to four bedrooms. Fine dining is available at Michelin-starred Restaurant Hywel Jones, while the Walled Garden has a

more relaxed atmosphere and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a focus on local ingredients. The venue caters Üill voÀ >lliÀ}iià >n` inÌoliÀ>nVià q >m `ili}hÌi` Ìo Ãii > dairy-free blackberry crumble on the menu. Adjoining the restaurant is the spa, which has a 20-metre pool and indoor- outdoor hydrotherapy pool, as well as thermal cabins, a post-treatment relaxation room and lounge with a skincare mixology bar. Outdoor activities include croquet, archery, shooting, falconry and duck herding.


IDEAL FOR: Couples, families and multigenerational groups will be happy here.
