A Spanish oil company relies on ten high-capacity packaging systems of the BEUMER stretch hood series for storing and delivering petrochemical pellets
FOR DECADES, A SPANISH OIL COMPANY RELIED ON THE SHRINKING METHOD TO WRAP IN FILM PALLETISED PE bags filled with petrochemical pellets. But with some of the systems approaching 30 years old and no longer meeting the latest safety standards, they asked BEUMER Group to install ten high-capacity packaging systems from their stretch hood A series. Within six months, they were integrated into the existing palletising and packaging lines at all sites. The machines met the high safety requirements and were energy efficient. The company, one of the major European petrochemical players, produces more than six million tons of chemicals per year. Its petrochemical pellets are delivered in big bags, octabins or 25 kilogram PE bags. The bags are palletised and wrapped in film to protect them against environmental impacts and dust. The plants had been using the shrinking method
since the 1980s. The machines worked reliably, but had been in operation for 20 to 30 years, in which time the technology requirements had changed, Because the heat required for shrinking relied on gas or electric power, the open flame repeatedly caused small burns on the film, often melting the pellets, a hazard that increased insurance rates and demanded frequent maintenance which was both expensive and dangerous for technicians. Also, energy consumption was high, and it became more and more difficult to get spare
parts. “We were searching for an economic and, above all, safe packaging system that could be maintained easily and efficiently,” said the project manager of one of the Spanish plants. The shrink systems that had been in use until then had been supplied decades ago by BEUMER Group, among others. Therefore this time, the responsible people also turned to the single-source provider for packaging lines from Beckum. Plácido Valle Santafosta, sales engineer at BEUMER
Group in Barcelona summarised the issue: “Our customer was looking for a manufacturer with high quality standard, many years of experience, high reliability and world-wide references.” The system provider tendered and won the contract to supply systems for one of the Spanish plants and, later, to supply further machines for its other plant - a total of ten packaging systems.
STRETCH FILM - THE ECONOMICAL ALTERNATIVE In order to guarantee protection during transport and load stability, the stretch film adapts to any product stacked on the pallet. It is very stretchable and its contracting forces keep the goods together. Advancing developments in film production mean more stable stretch films are coming to market. And since they can be produced in increasingly thinner layers, this saves material. They also contain increasing amounts of recycled material and consist of sustainable bioplastics.
