The year was only three months old when many companies turned their focus to surviving. As it came to a close, many saw themselves thriving - and the industry along with them
FEW INDUSTRIES HAVE QUITE THE EFFECT ON THE WAY WE LIVE OUR EVERYDAY LIVES AS POWDERS AND BULK solids. They touch every aspect of manufacturing from chemicals and pharmaceuticals to food and beverages and, as these pages demonstrate, so much more. You are reading this after a year which has seen the most unprecedented challenges for generations: supply shortages, factory closures and workforce issues tested us in ways we could never have imagined. In these pages, we dissect our most
resilient of industries by looking in-depth at the key areas of safety, handling and processing. Safety, in particular, still remains a key concern, even though reports of explosions and fires have reduced because of national lockdowns, but we make no excuse for highlighting issues related to industrial hazards and several experts lend their voice to the message that there is never room for complacency. That’s the bigger picture. On a more granular level, we focus on aspects such as the cosmetics industry, which has reported considerable success with powdered products
across many categories, from masks, shampoos, and conditioners to setting powders, toothpaste and soap. Similarly, we turn the spotlight on cocoa which itself has had its ups and downs, from the dip in sales of chocolate at the snack end of the market to the steep rise at the premium end fuelled by an overwhelming, and natural, desire for comfort food. Otherwise, success stories abound in, for example, 3D printing and its role in the production of components for face masks and ventilators, but it equally suffered from a pause in automotive sales as additive manufacturing in the industrial environment began to suffer. It’s been a rollercoaster year, but there’s something else worthy of note. Despite the sheer scale of the challenges, key global issues such as sustainability and waste reduction have never been
off the agenda. We may have had issues that have literally tested the entire planet, but we haven’t for a moment forgotten our duty to protect it.
