Writing skills
In pairs. Read Mariam’s story. Discuss the questions: Do you think that Mariam has a good plan for her future? Why/Why not?
Mariam’s story I am currently an IT student at AOU. I began my studies two and a half years ago. My course finishes in six months. After graduating, I will apply for a job in the IT section of a good company. I have some experience in working in IT. I completed a three-month internship in a small company last year. It was interesting and I learnt a lot because there was only one IT person in the company. He was always busy because he was responsible for all IT issues. However, I would like to work in a bigger company that helps staff to develop their skills and plan a career path. I am also going to apply to do further studies in IT. For me, the ideal future is where I can do part-time work and continue with my studies. I think that IT will become more important in the future because we are all linked electronically in a global village!

Example I have some experience in IT. We say experience of + verb + -ing to say that we have experience of doing an activity.

Writing
When we compare or describe things that are happening or have happened in our lives, we often use different tenses to link ideas in the past, present and future. Look at Mariam’s story again and answer the questions (a–d).
