No visit to Dartmouth is complete without a trip on a steam train, a paddle steamer or river boat – all run by the Dartmouth Steam Railway and River Boat Company. It’s the only attraction in Devon that lets you enjoy the delights of Torquay, Paignton, Brixham, Dartmouth and the River Dart, Kingswear and Totnes on your day out! One of the finest steam train trips in the country along the coast of Torbay, through stunning Devon countryside and overlooking the River Dart - linking the resort of Paignton with Dartmouth. The original railway line to Kingswear was completed in 1864. The Platform One Champagne Bar & Restaurant on Dartmouth’s embankment was the original station for passengers who travelled across the river by ferry to Kingswear to join the train. British Railways closed the line in the early 1970s before the line was reopened by the Dart Valley Railway in 1973 to run rail services mostly for the expanding tourist market. Prices from £19.95*.
Dartmouth River Boats operate a circular cruise from Dartmouth sailing the lower part of the River Dart viewing the castles at the estuary, Britannia Royal Naval College and towards Agatha Christie’s Greenway Estate. From early May to September, this cruise is predominantly on the historic paddle steamer “Kingswear Castle”. The
Kingswear Castle is the last remaining coal-fired paddle steamer in the UK. She was built in 1924 at Philip & Son of Dartmouth and has been lovingly restored to her former glory, beautifully reflecting the style and craftsmanship of a bygone era. In addition to scheduled services on the River Dart, she offers the most unique cruise and charter experience in the whole of the UK. Prices from £9.90*.
