76 Garden design O

ccasionally a prospective client, wanting an instant response or to jump the queue asks me to ‘knock out a quick design’. Influenced

by garden makeover programmes, where everything seems fast, easy – and cheap, they don’t realise that a designer’s experience, skills, creative inspiration and boring basics like the size of the garden, orientation, exposure, gradient and budget all conspire together to make good design something you don’t knock out quickly. Before practising, I

roughly 10% of the value of your property, which is enough to induce most people to sit down suddenly. (disclosure: it’s usually significantly less than this). Your designer would then need an accurate

survey of your garden, to the centimetre, including orientation and levels. This is particularly important in a hilly area like Devon. You simply cannot build steps for instance if you don’t know how many you need to get from A to B. This would be transfered to a CAD (computer aided design) package. If the design is being done in conjunction with building work, then architects will also be using this format. Taking into account the

your overall needs – your lifestage and lifestyle – do you have young children or are you ‘empty nesters’, do you entertain a lot, do you want a vegetable garden or swimming pool, what you want from your garden, how you would use it and the level of maintenance you would have the time or inclination to put in, or pay someone else to do for you. There’d also be a conversation about budget –

despite what makeover programmes suggest, gardens are expensive to create. The Society of Garden Designer’s rule of thumb is that you should think about

desired effect of the finished garden, allocation of space within it, the need for year round visual interest, planting style, colour palette, soil type, drainage, any new or existing hard landscaping such as

terraces, decks and steps the designer can then (finally) create a computer aided layout with detailed planting plans.

Unlike on TV programmes, the design process

is collaborative and there will be usually be some revisions and tweaks to the masterplan. So if you ever ask a designer to knock out something

quickly, you will now understand why rolled eyes may be one of the politer responses you’ll get.
