The Old Dartmothians making plans for 2023 Dartmouth Royal Regatta also

Association (ODA). The association traditionally holds a re-union dinner on the Friday evening of the regatta, but due to the intervention of the Covid pandemic it was not possible to organise the event this year. Another of the ODA traditions is for members to attend the regatta Friday lunchtime ‘Toasting to the Founders’ meeting at the Ship in Dock Inn, in Ridge Hill. The Ship in Dock Inn is where the inspiration and the formation of the men’s ODA took place on the regatta Friday in 1923, and it was here that I caught up with Richard Rendle MBE the current secretary of the ODA, to have a chat about how the association is coping with the ever- changing population dynamic of the town. He said: “Over the past decade or more, Dartmouth has seen a dwindling of full-time residents within the town and this has had an impact on many associations within the town. The ODA is no exception. Although the association has a large membership base, with members spread throughout the world, the numbers living within the town are slowly decreasing. “In 2023, the men’s

of the town for the benefit of residents, we will be looking at a few projects to fulfil that aim. “I would like to take this opportunity to make an appeal for more local men to come forward and assist us over the coming months and years. This is your town and I include Townstal as part of that. Our ambition is to continually improve it for the benefit of all. If you have a particular skill or interest that you think would be of benefit, and you can spare a few moments of your time every now and again, then you will be made most welcome. You can browse to see what the association has done for the town over the many

years since its inception, by visiting the association website www.dartmothians.org where there are details about the history of the association and how to become a member, should you so wish. “Every Friday morning members gather for an informal get together at the Ship in Dock Inn from 10:30. If you are interested to find out more then drop in for a tea or coffee and a chat, we will delighted to see you.” It was clear from my

conversation with Richard that he and fellow members have a passion for helping local causes and the people of the town. You may recall a couple of their recent projects such as refurbishing the entrance gates to the Royal Avenue Gardens and the renovation of the regatta whalers in 2019.
