8th October – AMMONITE. Cert 15. Drama/Biography 1840s England, acclaimed but overlooked fossil hunter Mary Anning (KateWinslet) works alone on the rugged Southern coastline. With the days of her famed discov- eries behind her, she now searches for common fossils to sell to tourists to support herself and her ailing mother. When a wealthy visitor entrusts Mary with the care of his wife Charlotte Murchison (Saoirse Ronan), she cannot afford to turn his offer down. Proud and relentlessly passionate about her work, Mary initially clashes with her unwel- come guest, but despite the distance between their social class and personalities, an intense bond begins to develop, compelling the two women to determine the true nature of their relationship.

11th November – ROCKS. UK, 2019; 93 minutes. Cert. 12A. Drama Directed by Sarah Gavron, Rocks is a gripping, beautifully acted slice of-life story set in inner-city London. The focus is on 15-year-old Rocks (the terrific Bukky Bakray). When their mother, who is suffering mental health problems, leaves the family’s tower block flat to ‘clear my head’, Rocks must juggle school with caring for her much younger brother Emmanuel. A plea for help to the children’s grandmother in Nigeria yields nothing. The story unfolds episodically as even the resourceful, street- wise Rocks is sorely tested, putting her relationship with her best friend Sumaya (Kosar Ali) under great strain. There is a huge, enveloping warmth to this film, as well as sadness and, on occasion, real hilarity.

25th November - WOMAN AT WAR (Kona fer í stríð ) Iceland. 2018; 101 minutes. Cert. 12A. Adventure/Comedy/Drama Halla is a fifty-year-old independent woman. But behind the scenes of a quiet routine, she leads a double life as a passionate environmental activist. Known to others only by her alias “The Woman of the Mountain,” Halla secretly wages a one-woman-war on the local aluminium industry. As Halla’s actions grow bolder, from petty vandalism to outright industrial sabotage, she succeeds in pausing the negotiations between the Icelandic government and the corporation building a new aluminium smelter. But as she begins planning her biggest and boldest operation yet, she receives an unexpected letter that changes everything. Her appli- cation to adopt a child has finally been accepted and there is a little girl waiting for her in Ukraine. As Halla prepares to abandon her role as saboteur and saviour of the Highlands to fulfil her dream of becoming a mother, she decides to plot one final attack to deal the aluminium industry a crippling blow.
