“Many a time I recall installing a new tank. After successfully fitting the adaptor and filter valve unit, I’d first confirm the valve was closed. Then I’d start pumping the fuel back from the holding tank or barrels. Whilst the fuel was being returned, I’d connect the new filter unit to the existing fuel pipe. Tightening the elbow fitting into the filter and aligning the outlet position correctly. On occasions this might be just a bit too far for the aluminium filter body. The result, a hairline crack in the filter housing. Ordinarily, this shouldn’t be a major issue as the filter units are ‘ten-a-penny’ to tank installers and there’s always a spare available on the vehicle. However, the problem is now compounded, as the tank is full or partially full of fuel. Before I can replace the OFV, I must first pump-out the tank. With Ultra Compact fitted, what for years has been a two-hour job is now transformed into a two-minute one.

On 30th June 2016 Stuart presented Ultra Compact to the Oil Care Campaign committee in London, UK. The reaction from all delegates was extremely positive and encouraging. The committee clearly recognise the new tank valve as a marked improvement on the current set-up. Their views summarised in the following official quote “Whilst a change to oil storage regulations is probably not practical at this time, good practice of this kind could be referenced in GPP2.” For those not familiar with the terminology, GPP2 refers to Guidance for Pollution Prevention. GPP2 is currently under review.

At OFTEC’s recent AGM, Chairman Nick Hawkins in his speech referred to two separate spillage incidents in Ireland totalling in excess of £3M in clean-up and reinstatement costs. Following research carried out, he also suggested, that it was estimated 400,000 single skin fuel tanks in the UK, both plastic and steel were well beyond their ‘use by’ date at 20+ years in age. Over the coming months, it is to be a key focus of Oftec working jointly with FPS to promote the upgrading of as many of these old single-skin tanks to new bunded versions.
