to introduce ELGI reference greases, combining ELGI and NLGI requirements would be advantageous. It is important to liaise with the NLGI to extend the level of data gathering.
For the future the TMWG will be also be interested in liaising with the ISO/TC 28/WG 19 ‘Development of Test Methods for Greases’ which had the first meeting in June 2015.

Railway Lubricants Working Group According to a study conducted by the EU Parliament (see following link ) 9 to 12 Million EU inhabitants are affected by railway noise during the night and day respectively. Reducing noise caused by railway traffic is subject to a number of legislation activities by the EU and/or its member states.
Squeal noise caused at the wheel-track interface is one of the sources of railway noise. Adjusting the friction characteristics at the wheel-track interface by means of track or vehicle side lubrication systems is well known, and already widely used in tram way systems. EN 16028 published in 2012 is a first standard for lubricants used for this application, including requirements for other typical lubricant properties, such as wear protection, rust prevention and low temperature flow characteristics.
The ELGI Railway Lubrication Working Group, under participation of lubricant and lubrication system manufacturers as well as end- users, is currently working on a proposal for a revised specification with updated standardised test methods and pass limits to more closely reflect the requirements of the wheel-rail interface.

Biobased Greases WG Summary of activities Biobased lubricating greases are high added value commodities with an increasing market share and a very positive perspective. These renewable products have matured and are no longer considered as experimental or entrepreneurial items. However the majority of performance standards are still based on petroleum-based greases and thus not always applicable to the biobased ones.
Based on these, the joint ELGI-NLGI Biobased Greases working group was formed in order to ensure that a more robust and viable biobased grease industry evolves for the benefit of the lubricating grease industry. It focuses primarily on the performance aspects of the biobased lubricating greases rather than on environmental topics. Emphasis is being given on key parameters such as Oxidation Stability and Cold Temperature Performance and the main objective is to identify and/or develop testing methodologies that are more suitable for assessing the behaviour of biobased greases.
Concerning oxidation stability a series of mini round robin tests have been conducted, several protocols have been examined and the group’s recommendation is underway. At the same time the group is gradually moving forward to the next important aspect for determining the low temperature properties of biobased greases. The Biobased greases WG is co-chaired by Lou Honary (ELM-USA) and George S. Dodos (ELDON’S S.A. - Greece).
