10 years in the making

Company Profile

As 2005 came to a close the events taking place on the European financial markets on 1st December – the raising of the interest rates for the first time in 5 years by the European Central Bank – may have been the key news item of the day…

… however in the West Midlands, UK the next step in the development of the UK’s leading wax and oil blenders was underway.

On Thursday 1st December 2005, H&R ChemPharm (UK) Limited came into being, operating from a site that has a long history in oils and lubricants manufacturing.

Founded in the 1840s and originally known as Joseph Batson and Co. the site had been purchased by BP in the 1960s as a manufacturer of greases, lubricants, and speciality waxes.

The site continued to develop under BP and by the year 2000 the business had become part of BP Global Special Products.

‘The Renaissance’…

… by the middle of the decade, with BP focusing on their upstream activities the site was acquired by the Hamburg based H&R Group, together with its associated and subsidiary companies forms a network of refineries and special blend plants satisfying global customer demand for white oils, wax emulsions, and paraffin waxes to name but a few.

The acquisition led to H&R ChemPharm (UK) Limited being established in 2005.

Much needed investment in the business by the H&R Group has ensured that the business is able to compete in the global market place with state of the art custom built manufacturing facilities producing products, specifically developed by H&R specialists in partnership with customers, to meet the exacting requirements of today’s markets and application needs.

The competitive success has also meant that H&R ChemPharm (UK) has gone from a loss making business in 2005 and 2006 to one contributing significant profits to the H&R Group over the last seven years.

‘Supplying a Diverse Market Place’… … the site is acknowledged as being a centre of excellence within the H&R Group for cable compound development and manufacture.

This fact is echoed in the wider cable community where H&R have established themselves as the only manufacturer offering both water blocking technology and dielectric compounds for telecommunication and energy cables.

The business has long been known for its wax blending expertise which goes back to its BP days and beyond. Over the ensuing years, H&R has developed links with the construction board and insulation sectors into which specialist wax and oil emulsions are supplied.

Specialist Blended Waxes are also supplied from the business’s Tipton, UK site into a diverse range of customer applications ranging from food packaging to candles – equestrian surfaces to adhesives.

Additionally, and as part of the wider H&R Group, H&R ChemPharm (UK) has access to H&R’s refineries in Germany allowing the growth of opportunities in the Process and Base Oil markets.

Innovation has always been key at H&R, and with an experienced Product Development Team the focus is very much on driving the businesses product portfolio forward.

In 2009 the team took the bold step to move away from their traditional markets with the development and launch of Super Absorbent Polymer technology. This water based polymeric solution, known as SAHARA®, which when applied to an appropriate substrate, creates an effective water and chemical resistant barrier resulting in application opportunities in a diverse range of areas.

‘And so to the next 10 Years and Beyond’… The first 10 years have seen positive achievements within the business which has responded well to the challenges it faced a decade ago.

The global market place in which they operate is continually evolving with manufacturers seeking to develop innovative solutions to meet product application challenges and for this they look to their suppliers more and more to become an extension of their product development team.

H&R ChemPharm (UK) continue to respond to these challenges through the development of new and innovative product solutions to satisfy market needs and requirements.

At the same time the business is constantly looking for growth and development opportunities to ensure that they continue to be at the forefront of the market in the supply of specialist wax and oil blends.
