Majestic Malta

When I heard that the UEIL 2015 Annual Conference was to be held in Malta, I was very happy because it’s my favourite holiday destination. I’ve been visiting the Maltese islands for 25 years and since 2003 have enjoyed scuba diving in the clear, warm waters. Malta is between Sicily and North Africa and easy to fly to from many European airports. The islands contain lots of interesting places to visit – including some megalithic temples which pre-date the Egyptian pyramids by 1000 years.

Since my last editorial, instead of a quiet summer, the news has been full of startling economic events across the world which will affect us all. The big news right now is the Chinese economy and worries of a slow-down which is affecting world commodity prices. This month, a US oil benchmark hit a low of $39 per barrel of crude. The low price of crude oil is hitting oil producers hard. Even Saudi Arabia has seen a sharp decline in its monetary reserves. The EC economy continues to be affected by problems with Russia over eastern Ukraine and the Crimea.

So it’s a safe prediction that our inter-connected world is still going through turbulent times and difficult to see too far ahead.

LUBE’s readers have been very active and productive as you will find out when you see what’s in store for you. This edition is 68 pages, equalling the April 2015 publication. Starting on page 12 you will be able to read the article submitted by Gareth Fish of Lubrizol who won the ELGI Best Paper Award whilst on page 40 you will find the first of a four part report from Lou Honary of Environmental Lubricants Manufacturing (ELM) on the performance of biobased and conventional railroad curve grease.

I am thrilled to announce that this edition of Lube Magazine carries the 100th edition of LUBE-TECH. You can read more about the history of LUBE-TECH on page 31.

Regarding the UEIL Annual Congress, my flight to Malta lands at 11:50 on Wednesday 21 October, so if anyone is at the airport and would like to share a taxi, do let me know. After checking in we can then enjoy a Cisk at the hotel.
