UKLA President’s Report Welcome to this, the first Report of a new Presidency.

It seems moments since John Alton took the chair and endowed us with his enormous experience, followed in quick succession by the two young bloods, Nigel Bottom and Simon Brander and it is with enormous thanks to Simon for his Presidency that we move to the next era.

Not quite John Alton, but having joined the Board of BLF during the Presidency of Ian Meadows in the early 90s and having been on the Board almost constantly since then, possibly the apprenticeship has been served and it with great humility that this Presidency is accepted on behalf of RS Clare.

Simon’s Presidency was slightly different in that he focused on some of the aspects of Knowledge and Corporate Social Responsibility which had not necessarily been a focus in the past and certainly the Board will sustain these efforts going forward.

However, as yet another two Mergers or Acquisitions in our industry have been announced this week, and as the environment for our traditional UK Member base, the Independent Blender, gets tougher in a global environment, it is worth commenting that the depressed base oil market and strong currency which have enabled such good margins may not continue forever and this is the time to invest that profitability in the business for the future.

For a number of years our Industry lobbying activity has been via UEIL and strongly targeted at Brussels, possibly to the detriment of the UK Industry lobbying at UK Government level, at a time when David Cameron is imploring Aston Martin to build its new factory in Wales to preserve and protect their heritage, possibly it is relevant to remind BIS (The Department concerned with Industry in the UK) that we not only exist but contribute to the economy in a number of very prominent ways.

UKLA is now financially stable and has an extremely strong and experienced Board, re-investing its energies in benefitting the Membership and raising awareness at a National level will be the two key points of this Presidency.

On the basis that the Presidency should be as open as possible please feel free to e mail direct on hgdjck@live.co.uk

UEIL President’s Report Dear Lube Magazine Readers,

Here we are, in October, ready for the UEIL 2015 Annual Congress! If you are reading this edition of the Lube Magazine in Malta, welcome!

From Apu Gosalia’s view on a sustainable future for our industry, to what technologies will revolutionise lubricants by 2030, I look forward to hearing what the excellent group of speakers we have selected for you this year has to share with us – a big thank you to the Programme Committee members for having put together such an interesting programme.

On Friday 23 October, we will focus on two specific topics: bio-lubricants and re-refining. Presentations from important stakeholders in these two sectors will take place, followed by panel discussions where you, our audience, will be able to ask any questions you may have on the two topics. I am particularly satisfied to see such a good panel that will speak to bio-lubricants. This is a sector that is increasingly important for our industry, and NOW is the time to know where it is headed. I thank the UEIL Board of Directors and the Congress Programme Committee for having agreed with adding this topic to the programme of this year’s Annual Congress.

Finally, I hope to see you on Saturday morning for a sense- awakening cruise in the Grand Harbour of Valetta!

I take this opportunity to report back to you on the UEIL meetings that were held in Brussels last month. The Board of Directors met on 24 September to discuss UEIL’s current

activities (at the heart of the talks: access to technical information, and partnerships with other stakeholders), but also to prepare the October UEIL General Assembly Meeting and the 2016 budget for our association.

The three main UEIL Committees (Health, Safety & Environment + Competition + Technical) also met in Brussels, with the HSE Committee focused on the REACH impact assessment conducted by the European institutions, and Technical and Competition dedicating most of their discussion time to address pending competition cases – mostly against OEMs who insist in creating a market that is not open nor fair to our industry.

GEIR, the Re-refining section of UEIL, was on 11 September hosted in Milan (Italy) by Viscolube, for its second General Meeting of the year. Besides having renewed their trust and hope in this sector of the lubricants industry, the GEIR Members were treated by Viscolube to a visit to the 2015 World Expo.

See you in the Hilton’s corridors for more details!
