ELGI 27th

Annual General

Meeting, 2015 Barcelona, Spain

I’ve been attending the ELGI Annual General Meeting for the past three years. I don’t know how they do it, but each time it gets better and better. The organisers work hard in building and developing the event, providing motivating speakers, interesting themes as well as superb locations. If you have never been to an ELGI AGM, make sure you go to the next one in Venice. Details of the ELGI 2016 AGM are at the end of this write up.

The theme for the 2015 ELGI AGM was Energy Efficiency: “How can greases, machine elements, additives or base oils contribute to cost savings? What are the right test methods?”

On Sunday 19th April, the ELGI AGM commenced with the Working Group Meetings. These working groups (WGs) are unique to ELGI, and have been created to deal with important issues in the European grease market. Current topics include Railway Lubricants, Bio-Based Greases, Fundamental Research, Food Industry Lubrication, Test Methods, Aerospace Greases, Education and Training, Grease and the Environment, Grease Shelf Life, REACH, and Grease Particle Evaluation. Other groups are encouraged and the ELGI facilities are available for such activities. Five of these groups met at the 2015 AGM, they were: Grease Particle Evaluation WG; Food Grade Lubricants WG; Test Methods & Rheology WG; Railway Lubricants WG and Bio-Based Greases WG.

Constantin Madius from Axel Christiernsson, ELGI’s Technical Co- ordinator, managed the WG meetings which were held on the Sunday from 9am to 4pm. These meetings are the culmination of all the hard work which has been going on throughout the year. I sat in on some of the WGs and found it rewarding to see how the participants put their hearts and souls into their work. The chair of each group was due to report the final outcomes after the welcome address the following day.

In the evening we were invited to join the ELGI for a rooftop buffet with drinks, which provided us with a further opportunity for networking.

On Monday 20th April, Terry Dicken, ELGI’s chairman, opened the AGM itself with a warm welcome address, informing us that 350 delegates from 27 world-wide countries were attending. He also explained that we would be viewing reports from five of the working groups as well as fifteen technical presentations. We then saw the NLGI presentation, which was given by NLGI’s Vice President Dave Como. This was followed by the Grease Production Survey presented by Joe Kaperick of Afton Chemical Corporation.

Terry went on to explain that ELGI had a stable 150 members and that the organisation was operating within budget and that they have harmonious links with UEIL and ICIS.
