Preventing cold corrosion of marine cylinder liners


Increased operating costs and stringent environmental regulations, at a time of reduced demand for cargo transportation, have put extreme pressure on the shipping industry. Despite falling fuel prices, the reduction of operating costs – and in particular reducing the fuel bill – is a top priority. Some operators have found that slow steaming is a quick and easy way to achieve this. However, the combination of slow steaming, with other hardware and operational modifications can cause increased corrosive wear of cast iron liners in marine engines, known as cold corrosion.

Low viscosity transmission fluids


A wide variety of requirements including emissions reduction, fuel economy, increased vehicle performance, greater power, and enhanced driving experience have driven tremendous change to automotive transmission technology. And, as transmission systems continue to evolve, with the latest hardware being adopted at different rates in various regions, the demand for advanced and tailored fluids is increasing.


Automatic transmission fluids (ATFs) have been providing some contribution to fuel economy performance. But, as Joe Noles, Infineum Transmission Fluids Technical Advisor explains, the proper design of a low viscosity fluid, which is carefully matched with a specific transmission design can yield significant fuel economy improvements.

The fast changing and relatively uncertain global base stocks market has a direct impact on finished lubricants. While increased availability of higher quality base stocks should satisfy the demand for higher quality lubricants, the increasing number and type of base oils brings a whole new level of complexity.
