clutch durability or ‘clutch feel’ over the typical drain intervals for motorcycle oils. It is clear that some products offer the minimum specification requirement but over the typical drain interval provide poorer clutch performance, which could have negative effects for the rider.


These issues have driven the need for tailored motorcycle oils that are specifically designed to address both end user and motorcycle hardware needs.


Meeting future demands


This changing and complex market, combined with the increasing unsuitability of PCMOs for motorcycle lubrication, spurred Infineum to apply its technical expertise to the development of additive technology specifically for motorcycle lubricants.


The outcome is the launch in early 2015 of Infineum S1990, which can be used to formulate the first SAE 5W-30 product in the market that is more in line with end user expectations and that can deliver ultimate motorcycle protection at a level equivalent to, or better than, higher viscosity grades. In product performance testing, Infineum S1990 has demonstrated outstanding performance in several key areas:


• Outperforms leading (SAE 10W-40) products in an extended Sequence IVA wear test


• Superb oxidation stability and engine cleanliness in the Sequence IIIG test


• Delivers excellent clutch friction results – far more than the JASO requirement


• Provides high end gear pitting resistance in line with bench mark products but at lower viscosity


While there are certainly many challenges in meeting the varying demands in the motorcycle lubricant sector, there are an equal number of opportunities for OEMs and additive manufacturers, as the sustained growth in this market looks set to continue in the years ahead.
