To overcome such harsh operating conditions, a lubricant should have a high viscosity index, good contamination control, efficient filterability properties as well as excellent oxidation stability. Mobil DTE 10 Excel hydraulic oil helps keep hydraulic systems running cleaner, increasing hydraulic system reliability and productivity.

The warranty on our machinery is about to expire. What lubricants should I look to use going forward?


As the cost of spare parts and repairing any type of failure will probably become the burden of the user after the warranty expires, operators need to ensure their lubricant offers maximum hydraulic system protection.


Some Original Equipment Manufacturer’s (OEM) warranties recommend the use of particular lubricants. However, once equipment is out of warranty, operators have the opportunity to invest in hydraulic oils which not only meet Original Equipment Manufacturers recommendations but offer additional performance advantages such as superior equipment protection and energy saving potential. Operators can potentially extend the life of their machinery and reduce failures by switching to a new generation high performance lubricant that helps systems to run cleaner and for longer.


We have different types of plastic injection moulding machines operating in our plant. In order to reduce scheduled maintenance we would like to undertake oil changes across all of the machines at the same time, which will mean extending the oil drain interval on some machines. How can this be achieved?


Oil drain intervals are one of the major factors influencing the length and complexity of scheduled downtimes and the overall lifecycle of machinery.


Extending oil drain intervals may have several benefits such as reducing inventory costs, operational risks, unscheduled downtime, waste oil costs and labour requirements. However, extending oil drain intervals significantly increases the chances of accelerating oxidation with increased levels of heat, water, O2


and catalysts in the system. Therefore, extending the oil drain interval without failure can only be achieved with high quality base lubricant stocks balanced with the right additive technology.


Laboratory and in-service field demonstrations conducted on a wide range of modern hydraulic systems, demonstrated that Mobil DTE 10 Excel has exceptional oil life, outlasting standard hydraulic oils by up to three times(2)


outstanding hydraulic system cleanliness and component protection.


When looking to extend oil drain intervals, operators should incorporate an oil and equipment condition monitoring programme alongside the use of a high quality hydraulic oil. As part of routine maintenance, the ‘health’ of the hydraulic oil and the hydraulic system itself should be regularly checked. Typically, it is advised that maintenance professionals perform quarterly oil analysis and annual system inspections.


The oil analysis should include a measurement of fluid viscosity, water content, particle count and dissolved metals to determine how well the system is operating. Examining changes in the oil analysis data over time, also known as ‘trending,’ is necessary to assess the condition of the hydraulic fluid. By trending oil analysis data it is possible to proactively address undesirable conditions before they become problems.


Hydraulic oil is currently leaking from one of our plastic injection moulding machines. How can I address this?


The problem of hydraulic oil leakage is very common in all kinds of systems due to the shrinking or swelling phenomenon caused by a number of issues including the incompatibility of the seal with the lubricant, mechanical misalignment, seal failures under high pressure, high temperature and/or high speed conditions.


High leakage rates result in higher lubrication costs, health and safety issues (slippery surfaces) and may lead to increased unscheduled downtime due to the reduced amount of oil in the system failing to provide adequate system protection.


There are two key ways to minimise leakage levels. The first is to undertake a complete hydraulic system inspection to define leakages and take necessary action such as renewal of seals, changing seal types or maintaining seals. However, this entails considerable equipment downtime.


The second, and more efficient, method is to use a shear-stable, high viscosity index lubricant that has universal compatibility with a wide range of seals. For example, Mobil DTE 10 Excel’s high viscosity index level provides optimum viscosity in high ambient temperatures when leakages are more likely to occur.


We use two different viscosities for winter and summer seasons. How can I merge them into one?


Using different viscosities to suit the weather conditions is a very common and established practice across many industrial sectors. However, this practice does result in production loss due to the scheduled downtime needed to change the oil, increased oil consumption and increased volumes of waste oil.


New generation hydraulic oils remove the need to alter viscosity according to seasonal requirements. These oils, such as Mobil DTE 10 Excel, act like multi-grade oils with their high viscosity index properties. High viscosity index products keep their working viscosity more consistent to its grade, meaning they provide optimum mechanical and volumetric efficiencies in all weather conditions.


Our systems are fully automated and controlled so oil temperature never exceeds 50ºC. Do I need to use high viscosity index lubricant?

Although lubricant temperatures are controlled and kept around 50ºC via heat exchangers, there are spikes in temperature in the machinery. Under high pressure – particularly in the cylinder and pump - the lubricant can reach temperatures of up to 100ºC for a very short period before they reach the heat exchanger.


Although these episodes are very brief, considerable damage can be caused, for example scuffing or similar liner damages, and even pump and valve failures. A high viscosity index lubricant like Mobil DTE 10 Excel will maintain a stable viscosity in those high pressure/high temperature conditions, minimising the effects of viscosity drop.
