Nynas Naphthenics Ltd celebrates the 25th anniversary of its registration as Nynas AB’s distribution arm for electrical, base and process oils in the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
Nynas is a different kind of oil company with a different kind of oil. Naphthenics. For over 30 years now, Nynas has made it their business to unlock naphthenic oils’ natural potential. Specialised in high-tech naphthenics, the once Swedish, now global company manufactures its products in two state-of-the-art naphthenic refineries in Nynashämn, Sweden and Harburg, Germany and at a partner refinery in Curaçao, Dutch Antilles. This mix of refineries ensures lower production costs and safeguards the volume to meet current and future demand. Products are then distributed all over the world via three hubs and around thirty depots including the UK’s local depot in Hull. The Houston, Antwerp and brand new Singapore hubs operate as central storage facilities and blending stations. The 35 local offices around the globe form another key part of the network, supporting a variety of activities from customer relations and technical support to collaboration in product
development and tailor-made logistic solutions. Nynas has around 860 employees, speaking 36 different languages and generates a EUR 2 billion turnover with a history of stable growth.
Coming in a broad selection of viscosities and with different degrees of refining, Nynas naphthenic base oils are the best choice for a wide range of applications including greases, industrial lubricants and metalworking fluids. The special qualities of the naphthenic oils include high additive solvency, good cooling properties, high emulsion stability, very good saponification yield in lubricating greases, good elastomer compatibility and excellent low temperature properties; creating a specific value profile for each customer in each of their applications.

Nynas came from Sweden to the English shores in 1990, setting up its local sales office, Nynas Naphthenics Ltd, in Guildford, Surrey. Abigail Riding, Sales Executive GB and Ireland comments, “Nynas’ ‘global business – local approach’ meant tying close partnerships with key local customers in each application from the very beginning. After 25 years, it would be impossible to estimate the volume of grease made from our oils or the quantity of metalworking fluids formulated with our products. Beyond lubes, I could not count the number of newspaper copies that have been printed with ink using our oils or guess the number of cups of tea that have been brewed thanks to the power generated by transformers using Nynas insulation oils”.
Rafael Renaudeau, Area General Europe West adds, “We are currently expanding production capacities at the Harburg refinery which will enable us to serve the global market in general, and the British and Irish markets in particular, on a much bigger scale. At the same time we see that an unprecedented amount of Group I oil production capacity is going to disappear (the closure of over one quarter of the region’s Group I capacity has already been announced) while Group II oils will not meet oil functional requirements. We are launching a new range of base and process oils which can meet these requirements with minimum need for formulation adjustments. If you add to this the re-shoring of industrial production to the UK and to other European countries, very exciting times lie ahead for those of us who remained committed local partners in the UK and all across Europe.”
