New natural energy sources are becoming much more prevalent in our world Natural energy or movement can be transformed into useful electricity or heat. Lubrication systems are a part of modern service and maintenance concepts. They bring the lubricant to the appropriate point in an exact measured quantity, at the right time. Lubrication systems also protect from wear and corrosion and as a result, they are an inevitable part of modern service and maintenance concepts.

Optimum protection for equipment operating in extreme conditions ExxonMobil Lubricants and Petroleum Specialties has introduced a new line-up of fully-synthetic industrial gear oils. The new lubricants offer energy efficiency benefits across a wide range of industrial gearbox applications. In tests and field trials they showed energy savings of up to 3.6 percent compared with conventional oils.

Regular monitoring of coolant concentration is necessary The adherence to a specific ingredient concen- tration has a considerable impact on the operating behaviour of cooling lubricants. Four determi- nation methods for monitoring the cooling lubricant concentration of emulsions/solutions, have been highlighted using: hand refractometers; acid cleavage; HCI titration; and via elemental composition.

Economic Highs and Lows
Over in the UK, if you measure then graph changes to its Gross Domestic Product figures (GDP) quarter on quarter since 1955, you will see a sharply oscillating chart, a bit like the typical
picture on an oscilloscope screen. The UK’s two big previous dips into negative growth that were greater than -2%, occurred in 1958 and 1973/4, but each of these saw a quick rebound back to positive figures. Whereas the graph for the latest recession – the one that we are still recovering from - looks different – it has taken longer to rebound, a situation that most of us are all only too aware of.
The UK’s 1st Quarter 2011 provisional GDP data shows the economy rebounded back just above ‘the zero line’ at +0.5% growth from the previous 4th Quarter 2010 negative 0.5% figure. Though many pundits believe 4Q10’s poor performance was mainly down to disruption caused by very inclement weather during December – it snowed so much that most of the UK was brought to a stop for what seemed like weeks and Christmas holiday shopping was badly affected. I wasn’t too surprised by the downturn. Overseas readers should understand that the UK never prepares for snow, as high snowfalls happens so infrequently or at least that’s the politicians excuse for lack of preparedness.
Within 1Q11 UK GDP overall figures, we see continuing good growth for manufacturing and the start of a rebound in the service sector, which has performed well, but the construction sector is still well down.
The good news within the latest figures is that UK manufacturing is continuing to generate export growth and for many of the manufacturing sectors activities – lubricants and greases – key to their success.

In the rest of the major European economies: the twice-yearly estimate from Germany's eight top economic research institutes expected Europe's largest economy to grow 2.8 percent in 2011, a significant step above the government's current forecast of 2.3 percent. Plus, there is increasing optimism for French economic outlook, with its government expecting growth of 2.0% for 2011. The Dutch economy grew by around 1.75% in 2010 and it is predicted that average growth will reduce to around 1.5% cent for 2011 and subsequent years. Italy’s GDP growth in 2011 is projected at the same rate as in 2010 (1.1%), with quarter-on-quarter growth at around 0.3-0.4% throughout the year.
It seems that ‘slow but steady economic progress’ continues to be made around Europe.
