UKLA President’s Report

Some of my previous reports have been written whilst I’ve been overseas. This one is compiled from the Black Country (which is just north of Birmingham, UK but not part of it).

I’ve recently been driving in Florida and had to fill the ‘gas’ tank on several occasions at $3.80 per US gallon. Converting this to sterling equates to around £2.38 per US gallon or £0.63 per litre (1 US gallon equates to 3.785 litres). Now I’m back in the UK I’ve had to fill up my car locally and the price for petrol is around £1.40 per litre (higher for diesel) this equates to $8.48 per US gallon. The price in the UK is more than double the price in the U.S. You’d think the Americans would be rather pleased at this differential, but the increasing price of gas (petrol) is as much a concern to them as it is to us in the UK. It remains to be seen what the recent

activities in North Africa, the Middle East and the events surrounding Osama Bin Laden have on crude oil prices.

The UK government has recently announced its Fair Fuel Stabiliser Policy and it will be interesting to see, when the small print has been finalised, if the word ‘Fair’ in the policy really does mean fair to the private and business consumer.

UEIL President’s Report Dear LUBE readers,

Two UEIL events are scheduled for 2011. The Annual Congress of the European Lubricants Industry 2011 will be held in Dubrovnik, Croatia from 26-28 October. This year we expect to reach approximately 250 delegates. I am sure UEIL members as well as management, sales executives and technical experts working in the Lubricants industry will not miss the opportunity to learn, network and enjoy the social programme in the beautiful city of Dubrovnik! More information on www.ueil.org

The 4th Symposium on ‘Metal Removal Fluids: Global challenges’ will take place in Barcelona, Spain 14- 16 September 2011. The Symposium will attract at least 200 global delegates and will be a unique opportunity to address product and system innovation issues of the metalworking fluids industry, also chance to discuss regulation and application developments in this dynamic sector. You can register now on the UEIL website.

One of our members, UNITI, organised the UNITI Mineral Oil Technology

Forum from 5-6 April. Over 320 delegates

attended sessions on Fuel, Heating Fuels and

Lubricants. This conference is now an international, established and attractive annual technical congress. Well done for this great success!

In the framework of the EU Energy Sustainable Week, the European Commission organised a conference on ‘Future Transport Fuels’. This conference was held between 11 and 15 April and served as a platform for wider discussion between decision-makers and stakeholder associations on the European Commission's strategic initiative on Clean Transport Systems, which will develop a consistent long- term strategy on alternative fuels substi- tuting for oil in the whole transport sector. UEIL is closely monitoring the issues taking into consideration the great importance transport policies have for UEIL members.

Enjoy your reading. Jos Jong
