A key point to note is that using biobased raw materials in place of petrochemically-derived counterparts doesn’t mean sacrificing outstanding lubricant performance. With rigorous formulation strategies, biobased lubricants can meet or even exceed the standards of traditional products. The EU Ecolabel, for instance, recognises environmentally acceptable lubricants that are both high-performing and safe for aquatic environments.

Selection is strategic

Raw material selection is a strategic decision that impacts every phase of a product’s life, from performance and safety to end-of-life recyclability. The source and chemistry of base oils and additives directly influence durability, efficiency, and regulatory classification.

New-generation engine oils, for example, must support advanced engine technologies while complying with stringent global emissions standards. Similarly, oxidation resistance, sludge prevention, and long-term performance all depend heavily on choosing the right ingredients.

A lifecycle perspective A holistic approach to product design is therefore something to be encouraged. Sustainability must be embedded across the full value chain – raw material sourcing, manufacturing, distribution, usage, and end-of-life. This includes using low-carbon transport, reducing energy in production, and enabling recyclability and reuse.

Ultimately, “sustainable” is a term that varies between stakeholders. But one message is clear: there is no need to compromise on quality or performance when transitioning towards biobased raw materials and away from petrochemicals. Moreover, the agricultural sector recognise that there is much to be done to provide accurate, representative carbon footprint information for bioderived ingredients and is working hard to generate and make available such data, needed for more accurate carbon accounting.
