Connecting technical expertise, supplier networks and sustainability KRAHN Chemie has already collaborated with lubricant manufacturers to calculate the carbon footprints of selected products within their portfolios, with discussions underway to extend this approach across entire product lines. By utilising standardised and validated methodology, these assessments adhere to the highest standards of accuracy and reliability, providing businesses with trusted data for decision- making and regulatory compliance.


Technical expertise plays an important role in these sustainability efforts, particularly when calculating product carbon footprints. A clear understanding of formulations, raw materials, and production processes helps ensure accurate data and a comprehensive assessment of environmental impact. Early access to supply chain data can further improve the accuracy and effectiveness of these efforts, as more detailed information from upstream partners allows for better- informed sustainability measures.


As a key interface between their producing partners and customers, distributors can play a pivotal role in ensuring high quality data by highlighting the importance of early and accurate supply chain data from both sides. A holistic approach that combines supply chain collaboration with sustainability expertise can help distributors ensure data quality and align with industry standards, enabling more informed decision making.


A look ahead: meeting the rising customer demand for sustainability support Sustainability is gaining increasing recognition across the lubricants sector, as reflected by the growing number of customer inquiries about product-level carbon footprint data reported by distributors in several countries, a shift that highlights the industry’s awareness of this need for action. Furthermore, lubricant producers are now seeking support for the calculation of the PCFs of their products not only from their suppliers in the form of raw material data but are also reaching out for support due to the complexity of

Distributors can meet these customer needs by building the necessary knowhow and by offering broader sustainability support. Engaging with customers to understand their challenges, refining tools and collaborating with industry bodies and partners will remain central to the industry’s approach to sustainability.


Lastly, it is also up to customers in the specialty chemicals industry to actively communicate their needs to their distributors, highlighting their role in driving meaningful change. “By engaging early, companies can improve data quality, gain clarity and identify solutions that are truly sustainable,” says Cristian Groenewegen.


He also emphasises the importance of collaboration and encourages companies to reach out to their distribution partners: “Distributors are ideally positioned to help make complex sustainability data accessible and actionable,” he says. “By connecting technical knowledge, supply chain data and regulatory requirements, distributors and customers can turn sustainability into a shared success across the entire value chain.”
