The Anton Paar SVM provides more than just a single parameter with the push of a button. It even allows for simultaneous measurement of viscosity at both 40°C and 100°C, enabling instant viscosity index (VI) determination as per ASTM D2270. Additionally, it offers a range of integrated calculations, including but not limited to:
• Viscosity gravity constant (VGC) (ASTM D2501) • Mean molecular mass (ASTM D2502) • Viscosity extrapolation (ASTM D341) • Carbon type composition (ASTM D2140)1 • Carbon distribution and ring content (ASTM D3238)1
These built-in capabilities significantly enhance the practical applicability of D7042 viscometers, offering a more comprehensive analysis in a single, automated process.
User-friendly and highly flexible ASTM D7042’s measurement process is fully automated, with data recorded digitally, minimising user effort. The latest SVM viscometers are even equipped with a funnel, allowing operators to pour samples directly into the device, eliminating the need for vials, pipettes, or syringes. With just the push of a button, the sample is automatically filled, measured fully standards-compliant, and drained, requiring no further user intervention.

Furthermore, SVM supports a broad range of sample types, from hydraulic fluids (-54°C) to waxes (+135°C), making it suitable for diverse applications. Its thermoelectric temperature control allows for rapid thermal equilibration, heating, and cooling rates of up to 20°C per minute. Fully automated temperature scans can be performed to study the temperature dependence of samples. Additionally, unlike the glass capillary method, which measures viscosity at discrete points, the continuous nature of the viscosity measurement in ASTM D7042 allows for real-time monitoring of viscosity changes over time via a time scan.

ASTM D7042 has undergone extensive validation by ASTM across various petroleum industry samples, including base oils, lubricants, diesel, biodiesel, and jet fuels.
