update
Miltos Bantis, GEIR President
The new European Commission for the 2024-2029 mandate has officially taken office, marking a pivotal moment for the EU as it navigates an era of transformative challenges and opportunities. For the new mandate, the Commission will place a significant emphasis on strengthening the circular economy as a core element to enhance its competitiveness and sustainability agenda.
Within the first 100 days, the Commission is expected to adopt the Clean Industrial Deal, which is poised to act as a catalyst for scaling circular economy practices across Europe. By integrating circularity into its industrial strategy, the EU will strengthen its sustainability goals while boosting industrial resilience, competitiveness, and innovation. This alignment will be crucial for transitioning to a more sustainable and resource-efficient economy.
Another important initiative is the Circular Economy Act, which is expected in 2026. The Commission has already announced that it will introduce instruments to boost the supply and demand of secondary raw materials, focusing on key areas to further integrate circularity into the EU’s economy. This includes the promotion of a system that increases waste prevention, material recovery, and recycling, aiming to reduce landfill waste and improve resource efficiency. Furthermore, the initiative aims to regulate and harmonise criteria for mandatory EPR schemes besides those covered by EU legislation, ensuring that producers take responsibility for the entire lifecycle of their products.
These initiatives offer significant opportunities to boost the regeneration of waste oils. GEIR will engage with the new Commission on the shaping of the Circular Economy Act and other relevant initiatives to ensure the best possible outcome for our industry.
