UKLA President’s Report The road to net zero is not without its issues.
In 2024, Ford Europe announced it would slash 4000 jobs over the next three years and cut back production of its Explorer and Capri EV models at its Cologne plant. VW would slash 35,000 jobs by 2030 and close two factories - unheard of in modern times for the automaker, and Honda and Nissan have agreed to merge as they struggle to match rivals on electric vehicles.
There has been a great deal of talk in Government about what net zero looks like, but less about how we are going to get there in transforming the economy without inflicting lasting damage on economic institutions. Synthetic fuels and green hydrogen as part of a net zero solution presents a golden opportunity for our sector to remain at the very heart of the modern automotive industry.
Working in double time means delivering the future while safeguarding the present. The economy needs a roadmap to deliver net zero whilst safeguarding the current economic model. Decarbonisation should
not mean de-industrialisation as UK Government’s Secretary of State for Business & Trade Jonathan Reynolds said, ahead of announcing an Industrial Strategy Advisory Council to boost growth and living standards chaired by Microsoft Executive Clare Barclay, President, Enterprise & Industry, EMEA.
So where does this all leave our sector?
UKLA will continue to lobby government on the role lubricants plays in a net zero economy, and also press to adopt synthetic fuels and green hydrogen as alternate fuels to deliver net zero whilst delivering on the zero-emission vehicle mandate, which itself is up for consultation in early January.
Balancing the ends of the future while meeting the ends of today must lie at the heart of any government’s agenda, and businesses’ role is to help government to deliver its policy ambitions whilst allowing businesses to deliver theirs.

4 LUBE MAGAZINE NO.185 FEBRUARY 2025
Reflecting on 2024, it was a year of progress and achievement for our association. We welcomed new members, strengthened our committees’ activities, and collaborated with partners to address critical challenges facing our industry. A particular highlight was the certification of the joint ATIEL and UEIL ‘Methodology for Product Carbon Footprint Calculations for Lubricants, Greases and Other Specialties’ by TÜV Rheinland Energy GmbH. This milestone underscores our commitment to advancing global standardization in carbon footprint calculations for lubricants, fluids, and greases.
From this starting point, I am confident that, working together, we will make 2025 a great year for the European lubricants industry!
Mattia Adani, UEIL President
