implementation policy driven LCA, e.g., positioning of Environmental Footprint (EF) methods, which have become increasingly important in sustainability policies at both the EU and national levels. These methods offer a robust scientific foundation for assessing the environmental impact of products and organizations, positioning them as invaluable tools for both
policymakers and businesses. In terms of reducing CO2 emissions, recognition in emission reduction efforts and incentive mechanisms, such as labeling, are vital in motivating suppliers and engaging consumers.
Despite clear awareness of the detrimental impact of fossil-based materials on the environment, both businesses and end-users often prioritise cost over sustainability. The willingness to pay for sustainable alternatives varies widely across regions and industries, affecting the pace of the green transformation.
Outlook
For two decades, bioenergy and biofuels, as well as Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), have thrived under comprehensive policy support frameworks, resulting in significant market success. These initiatives have created markets worth billions, generating investments, jobs, and substantial CO2
savings.
Dr. Ivana Krkljuš is a seasoned professional with over 13 years of experience at BASF, where she currently oversees Bioeconomy and Market-based mechanisms, as part of BASF´s Corporate Sustainability Team, responsible for Green Transformation Strategies.
However, the chemicals and materials sector has yet to see similar support, resulting in a non-level playing field between energy and material uses of biomass. This disparity acts as a barrier to the de-fossilisation of the chemicals and materials industry, as the energy sector can offer lower feedstock prices due to its support mechanisms.
Looking ahead, there is reason to remain optimistic. As customer awareness continues to grow and regulatory frameworks become more supportive, the demand for low-PCF products is expected to rise, paving the way for a transition to a more sustainable, circular economy.
