Good Practice Guide for Safe Handling and Use of Metalworking Fluids

Kevin Duncan, Chair of the MWFPSG

Metalworking fluids (MWF) are an important but very complex area of the lubricants market, the UKLA Metalworking Fluid Product Stewardship Group is intended to help and support additive companies, formulators, and end users on all aspects of MWFs. Everything from the risks associated with formulating and safe usage of MWFs, through to advice on responsible disposal at end of life.

Recently we have partnered with the HSE to identify the major hazards when using metalworking fluids including the use of compressed air and MWFs, skin contact and inhalation of MWFs and how to manage in use application which culminated in the publication of the “Good Practice Guide for Safe Handling and Use of Metalworking Fluids”.

We have commissioned a series of short videos documenting good practice for monitoring metalworking fluids. The films will focus on the benefits to operator health and carrying out regular effective coolant management. The films will show how simple and quick some of these analytical techniques are with demonstrations in a manufacturing environment.

The project is due to complete at the end of the year and there will be a series of bulletins and social media releases to encourage and support the drive to improve standards across the industry.
