Engine oil removed from sale following successful VLS investigation
VLS, the Verification of Lubricant Specifications, has announced the outcome of case VLS010151: a complaint against a fully synthetic 5W30 Hypalube Evo engine oil manufactured by Granville Oil & Chemicals Ltd.
A complaint was received in November 2017 concerning the ability of the product to meet its own technical specifications and the claims it made regarding a combination of ACEA engine oil sequences alongside a number of OEM specifications. In particular, it was alleged that the product did not meet its own stated NOACK volatility measure and that its claims for OEM specifications pertaining to VW 504.00/507.00, PSA B71 2290 and GM LL–A/B– 025 for which it was claimed that no additive package was currently available to meet those requirements.
VLS tested a sample of the product and found that it
did fail to meet its stated NOACK volatility measure in in relation to a claimed OEM specification. The VLS Technical panel also raised questions about the claims relating to PSA B71 2290 and GM LL-A/B-025.
Once they had been contacted with the case findings, Granville Oil & Chemicals Ltd cooperated fully with the investigation and undertook their own internal investigation, eventually deciding to discontinue the product effective 30th June 2018.
David Wright, Secretary of VLS and Chairman of UKLA said: “Granville were extremely helpful and accommodating, running their own internal investigation and quickly determining the best outcome for their customers and end users. This case is a perfect example of VLS performing its vital role to maintain standards in the industry and ensure an open and transparent market.”
