Trends impacting grease technology Grease Technology & the marine market
ends Impacting & the Marine Market Mark Wheeler, Market Development Manager, Axel Christiernsson International AB
The exposed conditions experienced by both on-deck equipment and lubricants are an ever-present threat to the operational productivity and efficiency of vessels within the Marine segment. Consequently, selecting the right grease has long been a “quay” factor in ensuring protection from the elements and equipment reliability.
However, with a trend toward increasing environmental and material controls for both the Marine segment as well as the wider world, is the grease industry sufficiently prepared to deal with the potential implications for its’ traditional technologies upon which it has long become reliant?
It is clear that in recent years global growth has advanced at an unprecedented rate. This in turn has led to increasing concerns regarding the environmental impact of such activity and its’ long term sustainability, ultimately resulting in a growing need for action.

One consequence affecting large-scale, industrial businesses is the need to conduct operations with greater responsibility and increased sensitivity towards the environment.
And, as we will see, ultimately their efforts are shifting consumer behavior with the potential to increasingly impact the grease and marine industries directly.
Firstly, environmental awareness has driven an increase in the legislation and standards imposed on operators and lubricant formulators to reduce the impact of the greases used when, as is inevitable in total loss lubrication systems, they end up in contact with the surrounding environment.
Secondly, as the Auto Industry becomes increasingly pressured to drive down vehicle emissions, their efforts are having a direct impact on the Raw Material Landscape for Greases.
