Start mapping out what requirements you have and which current employees have potential to fill these roles. Work with seniors to determine what skills and steps are needed for employees to get there, keeping in mind how the company may differ in the future. Then, make these internal growth opportunities known to encourage staff to develop skills and stay with the company, and provide training and development for those who’ve the potential to do the job.

Make time to establish new relationships even if you aren’t recruiting now. A lot of our own recruitment is through trusted recommendations and networking - this forward-planning allows you to recruit faster and cuts out risks with hiring an ‘unknown’ person.

A surprise resignation from a key staff member requires a quick replacement. A network of contacts and a bank of potential replacements speeds up the process, without compromising quality.

How are ABN tackling the ageing workforce in recruitment?

Recruiting to the desired brief for industry experience is our primary aim, but we also ask customers to consider complementary skill sets from allied industries. This widens the talent pool, achieving some great hires with new people and ideas coming into the industry. Using advanced behavioural assessment technology (such as our own i-intro platform) also allows us to identify the right attitudes and character traits, so new hires fit company culture perfectly.

Despite the current workforce climate, we believe actioning the above strategies along with accepting workers with transferable skills, will lead to a more stable future – but we as an industry must take action now.
