Stable supply of base oil quality is also important where they are used in formulations for OEM factory fill and OEM service fill to maintain consistent quality of the approved formulation. This is an area where base oil suppliers are very active and apply tight controls in the production of their base oils. These additional steps do add extra cost but supply consistency is very important.

Some base oil manufactures also work with additive companies on formulation development to gain OEM and industry approvals. With these base oils being consistent in quality it means some additive packages are only suitable for use in that particular base oil and that for other base oil slates from the same base oil group a booster or even a different additive may be needed. It may also be that in one base oil more OEM approvals are possible compared to another base oil slate from the same group.

With this in mind it is critical that formulations that are developed and approved by OEMs and industry are blended according to what was approved to avoid any issues in the long term which will have an impact

on the reputation of the oil marketer and the industry. However sometimes there is a need to change base oil slates within a formulation and when this is needed there are guidelines from some OEMs and industry to show what is allowed and what is not allowed. These guidelines are based on data and have been developed in order to offer the maximum protection possible to the end user.

Working together the industry and OEMs have requirements and specifications for all sorts of lubricants covering many applications. It is these specifications that ensure the formulations do the job they have been developed for and reduce potential for failure due to mis-application or from blending a different formulation from the one that was approved.
