EDITORIAL It’s official! Lube Magazine is

Be honest, how many Lube readers can actually remember being 30? (Sorry millennials, nothing personal!) But it’s tricky though, isn’t it? The milestones are easy: events such as moving home, changing jobs, passing a driving test, buying that dream car… but the devil’s in the detail as we all know. Hopefully our Lubricants Timeline on page 54 will trigger a few memories for you, not to mention offer a fascinating insight into some of the key events and changes that have impacted on our industry during the last 30 years.

But alongside the highlighted events, I’m more intrigued at the journey of Lube magazine itself – it has metamorphosed several times throughout its lifetime, from its inception as a periodic, UKLA members only newsletter, to being the voice of the UK lubricants industry; to its prestigious role as the official journal of the UEIL and to its current, unique status as the only global publication solely dedicated to the lubricants sector. Not bad for a 30-something!

As I prepared this issue for print I couldn’t help but mentally fast forward to the next 30 years – how will the industry look in 2048? What technical innovations and scientific developments will play out? What impact are these changes going to have on our industry and lifestyle (in or out of the EU!)? What then for the manufacture, formulation, regulation, supply, demand and application of industrial lubricants?

Relax, I won’t be attempting to forecast the future of our industry here – I’m leaving that to the expert speakers and decision makers at the UEIL Annual Congress in Budapest, later this month, who are ‘Embracing the Future’. But I am really excited to be a part of the process and discussions, and very much looking forward to making new friends and associates

at the event. And of course there will be a report on the Congress in December’s issue for those who won’t be attending.

Meanwhile, my UKLA road trip is well underway – I’ve spent time this summer getting acquainted

with several of our member partners. So far my visits have taken me to Millers Oils, Morris Lubricants, Afton Chemical, Infineum, and media agencies, DNA Design & Advertising and Polygon Marketing. My technical installation visits and rig tours have been fascinating and informative. I’ve learnt (am learning!) so much; the patience and hospitality from everyone I’ve met on the way has been amazing and I’m reminded constantly how this industry really does welcome newcomers with open arms.

But the stand out message for me so far is that from its 19th century origins and the first commercial extraction of crude oil in Scotland in 1841, to its present day multi-billion global incarnation, this industry is nothing short of dynamic, innovative and resilient (as Tim Hill’s meticulously researched book, ‘A History of the British Lubricants Industry’ reveals). Whatever changes are coming in the next 30 years, there’s no doubt the lubricants industry will ‘keep calm and carry on’.

I look forward to meeting many more of you very soon... meanwhile, I’m off to enjoy some birthday cake!

Until next time…
