One of our longest running outreach projects is our Technology Design and Innovation (TDI) Challenge. This annual event has been going for nearly two decades and exists to help teachers and lecturers to promote the great work of their D&T and Engineering students and to celebrate the creativity and innovation taking place inside the curriculum. In turn, the competition helps our industry to better understand the challenges that education is facing and how we might be able to assist through collaboration.

The competition is aimed at GCSE and A Level students; they submit their course work projects and a panel of industry judges made up of our membership decide on the winning projects. This sort of engagement makes the student not only think about product design and manufacturing, they also have to consider the marketing aspect of their project and what gap it fills.

The results of this have been phenomenal and always remind me how much talent we have within the UK that just needs to be nurtured for it to reach its full potential.

The other unique aspect of the TDI Challenge is the fact we hold the finals at Yamazaki Mazak’s European Technology Centre in Worcester. This gives not only students, but teachers, a glimpse of an ultra-modern manufacturing facility.

As I said at the start of this feature, it is all about changing people’s perceptions of manufacturing and engineering within the UK. It is all about dispelling those damaging myths of what being an engineer entails. It is all about letting the next generation know whatever your background there are no limits to what you can achieve by entering one of the most exciting industries in the world.

Manufacturing technologies shape the world around us and with the right nurturing and encouragement we know, as an industry, that the UK has a huge part to play in doing this. The MTA and our members are committed to championing our sector and we hope you support this vision too.
