UNITI

Congress 2018

Over 630 delegates attended the UNITI Mineral Oil Technology Congress in April this year. Specialists from the lubrication industry, professionals from the automotive industry and experts in mechanical engineering gathered together at the renowned international UNITI Mineral Oil Technology Congress to discuss current trends and future developments in the industry. The topics discussed included the most recent lubricant industry developments from research through to practical applications. The social evening offered further opportunities for expert discussions

whilst eating delicious food and listening to some classical talented musicians in a relaxed atmosphere.

This year there was a strong presence from the automotive industry, this being an important area in our sector at the current time. The congress provided an excellent platform to share expertise and offered great networking opportunities on an international level. The open dialogue from the mineral oil and additives industries was very valuable for all participants.

The Congress began with pre-conference seminars from Infineum and Nynas. These were held on the day before the congress, were very well supported

and offered valuable industry insight. The presentations which followed during the days of the congress were of a particularly high and technical quality. Parallel presentations were held and simultaneous translations were available for those who needed it.

There were many companies exhibiting which offered the scope to open up markets and explore other prospects. An App was available which aided networking, provided further information about the sponsors and exhibitors as well as providing programme information, news, updates and notifications.

Good Practice Guide for the Safe Handling of Metalworking Fluids launches at MACH 2018

Between the 9th to the 13th April, the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, UK played host to the 2018 MACH show. Held every two years, MACH attracts around 25,000 visitors to 600 exhibitors across six halls of the centre, providing a vast networking opportunity for thousands of industry professionals.

In addition to allowing industry professionals and prospective customers to make contact with exhibitors, there are also facilities for seminars and product launches which are held regularly throughout each day of the show. The exhibition’s seminar programme was the highlight of the event, attracting experienced industrialists and new students alike.

As was announced by Gareth Evans of the UK regulator Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in the April 2018 edition of Lube magazine, this year’s MACH saw the United Kingdom Lubricants Association’s Metalworking Fluid Product Stewardship Group (MWFPSG) launch the Good Practice Guide for the Safe Handling and Disposal of Metalworking Fluids. This publication is a new guide developed in close association with HSE for the benefit of MWF users throughout the UK.

On Tuesday afternoon Jenny Skeldon, HSE Inspector and Lead for the Metalworking sector, led a seminar at the event introducing the guide to visitors and exhibitors.

Over the course of the five days of the event, particularly following the introductory seminar on the Tuesday, members of the MWFPSG met with representatives from machine tools companies, industrial machine manufacturers as well as leading OEMs such as Nissan, McLaren and Rolls-Royce, to explain and discuss the new guidelines, which were available from the UKLA stand.

At the close of MACH 2018 MWFPSG members had met with 500 visitors and distributed around 350 copies of the new guidance document; a good first step in ensuring best practice in MWF handling in the UK.
