UKLA President’s Report


I spent a very enjoyable day perusing all that was on offer at the 2018 Autosport International Show at the NEC, Birmingham. On the drive home it occurred to me how big this industry actually is, and also how much talent it attracts.


In the UK alone this industry is worth £9 billion compared to £4.6 billion in 2000 making it a crucial contributor to the UK economy. This comprises of 4500 companies that are involved in high performance engineering, of which 87% export their products or service skills and 45% of the businesses are engaged in high performance engineering. The motorsport sector has shown continuous growth for well over ten years and has had strong focus on research and development with


15% of all companies spending over 25% of their annual turnover on research and development. Again the UK sector is enjoying the highest levels of sales turnover in its history. The highest export potential currently being USA, Germany and France with China, Brazil and Russia being the strongest emerging potential economies.


My point here is that this industry shares many common issues with the aerospace sector i.e. exotic alloys, often pushing the design envelope, machining processes that work to incredibly fine tolerances. New methods of joining and fixing materials together like new bonding methods, heat treatment processes and, usually in this sector the deadlines can be frantic due to race deadlines or seasonal regulation changes.


UEIL President’s Report


At UEIL we have been finalising the program for our Annual Congress that will take place in Budapest on October 25-27. Thanks to a very engaged committee and an all-time high participation of members in the preparation, I am very proud to announce that we have put together a strong and unique program.


The theme of the Congress will be “The Lubricant Industry: Embracing the Future.” We will explore and debate the most important challenges that the industry needs to tackle to prepare for the future in a proactive, forward-looking, and solution- oriented manner, with presentations by leading experts in different fields and a number of panel discussions involving representatives from the global lubricant industry and external experts. We will address a number of hot topics, from 3D printing to sustainability, from digitalisation to talent acquisition.


Attracting young talents and fostering the next generation of lubricant experts and innovators is a key success factor for our industry. This poses

It can also be a challenge finding some of these producers. They may be a small unit on an industrial park with only a couple of CNCs that produces the most vital part for someone’s car, but then life is a challenge.

Yet, on a global basis, too few students pursue expertise in STEM fields–and there is an inadequate pipeline of teachers. This is however only one aspect of this issue. Due to the high market demand for STEM students, the lubricant industry is facing a tough competition to attract young professionals.

At this year’s Annual Congress this issue will be discussed amongst a team of experts, including a head-hunter working closely with the lubricant industry, a university professor, a young professional that has chosen to work in our industry, and a HR manager from a lubricant company, with the aim of identifying together approaches and solutions to best prepare our industry for the future.
