The 50th GOMA Lubricants and Base Oils Symposium

This year, GOMA celebrates the 50th anniversary of the GOMA Lubricant and Base Oil Symposium so that the event will be held in Zagreb, Croatia, where GOMA’s main office is located. The event will be held in Esplanade Hotel, the most luxurious hotel in Zagreb, from 18 to 20 October, 2017. This Symposium is the biennial event primarily focused on issues affecting lubricants industry, which also includes issues related to the development of base stocks and additives, application, standardisation and care for the environment. This year’s event will be organised in partnership with the European Lubricating Grease Institute - ELGI again.

In ancient Greece, the symposium was a drinking party, and the word Symposium is derived from the Greek word Symposion or Sympinein meaning drinking together. It was a forum for men of respected families to debate, discuss, drink, or simply to revel with others. GOMA Symposium, as one of the oldest European meetings of such kind, obviously inspired by the ancient Greeks, but not in all aspects, would also like to offer a good balance of working programs, bonding and fun. The main intention of the organiser is to offer to all participants an excellent place for discussion, discovering the latest industry developments and

building professional networks. So that the venue has carefully selected to provide stimulating environment for participants or their partners who get a chance to experience many social events and enjoy a relaxing ambience of the selected venue.

The Symposium three-day Programme is structured into introductory and closing sessions, topical or thematic sessions and poster session. The symposium programme has generous breaks to allow plenty of time to visit the exhibition and to interact with other participants.

The programme will traditionally start with introductory lecture from Professor Bartz. It should be pointed out that Professor Bartz is GOMA’s honourable member and he gave his first presentation at the 8th GOMA Symposium on pitting fatigue at rolling and sliding contacts. It was in 1974 in Opatija. At the same Symposium Professor Peter Jost reported on his famous “The Jost Report” on how friction, lubrication and wear directly and indirectly affected British economy. In that report the word tribology was used for the first time. The main topic of that Symposium was “Tribology and lubricants application”. In other words, GOMA has always been paying attention on the significance of the most recent achievement of technological development and has always been looking for a way to approach new knowledge to its members, especially to younger ones, but also to journal readers and Symposia participants. GOMA is Croatian Society for Fuels and Lubricants.
